ROSENTHAL 1975 Christmas Plate FREIBURG CATHEDRAL is the title of the 1975 Rosenthal Christmas Plate. Located in southwest Germany, FREIBURG CATHEDRAL (Freiburg Minster or Freiburg Münster) was built in three stages between 1120 and 1330. The church became the seat of the Catholic archbishop of Freiburg, and thus a cathedral, in 1827. (To be correctly called a CATHEDRAL, a church must be the seat of a bishop.) It is the only Gothic church tower in Germany that was completed in the Middle Ages (1330) which has survived to the present day. Hand painted ("handgemalt") under the glaze in shades of blue, gray, brown and tan. The central scene is banded with gold, and bears the inscription WEIHNACHTEN 1975. (Weihnachten is the German word for Christmas.) Porcelain, approximately 8.5 inch (21.5 cm) diameter, with attached plastic button and hanging wire. Signed “Rosenthal Group, GERMANY”. Artwork by Helmut Drexler. Limited edition; issue price in 1975 was $75 – approximately $340 in today’s dollars, a measure of the very high quality of the Rosenthal Christmas plates.
